Spotlight on OHH Research Foundation
At Oklahoma Heart Hospital, we do much more than treat patients for heart, lung, sleep, and other issues that impact their cardiovascular health. Research is at the heart of what we do, as it allows us to treat OHH patients with the best technologies and methods available and impact the treatment of heart disease everywhere.
Why clinical research matters
Researchers are constantly advancing scientific knowledge and exploring innovative ways of treating heart disease. Before new therapies or treatments can be authorized for use by the FDA, their safety and effectiveness must be proven. The safest and fastest way to innovate in the treatment of heart disease is through clinical trials that use new treatments on volunteers in carefully designed studies.
These volunteer trials allow us to assess if they are useful for wider treatment of a specific disease. Whether it’s testing a new medical device or the latest in diagnostic techniques, clinical research allows scientists to prove which technologies are the most effective.
How clinical research benefits patients
The OHH Research Foundation brings the latest innovations to Oklahoma, often including technologies and treatments not available at other area hospitals. When those treatments are approved for use beyond clinical research, OHH doctors already have experience with the latest techniques and advances because of working with the research teams.
The impact goes far beyond the patients served at our many locations in Oklahoma. We are one of the largest cardiovascular research facilities in North America, and the clinical research studies conducted through our facilities improve treatment globally. As treatment methods advance, quality of life is improved, and lives are saved. In addition to clinical research studies, OHHRF offers educational services to medical professionals in select fields who practice medicine throughout Oklahoma and in other states.
How to participate in a clinical trial
Clinical trials have specific eligibility requirements, so talk with your Oklahoma Heart Hospital physician first to see if you’re a potential candidate for research trials in general and any specific trials currently enrolling patients. Meeting eligibility requirements ensures that the trial will be safe for participants given their current conditions and health.
All participants must go through the informed consent process, which helps educate the patient on what is being tested, how the trial will be done, and any risks involved. This phase of the process provides an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about participating and gives details about the trial before you begin.
If you are interested in being a part of the groundbreaking research happening at Oklahoma Heart Hospital, talk to your doctor about whether you’re a good candidate for enrolling in a clinical trial.
